Nonsequitur: “The World Is Sliding Backwards”

August 6, 2012

The U.S. State Department has released its 2011 International Religious Freedom Report*, highlighting the abuse of blasphemy and registration laws and the treatment of minority religious groups as security threats.

According to Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton:

The world is sliding backwards … more than a billion people live under governments that systematically suppress religious freedom.

In the U.S., we are lucky (or blessed) to have freedom to practice religion and freedom of speech.  But even here, there may be some “back-sliding”.   Pope Benedict XVI recently pointed to an “unprecedented” threat to religious freedom in the U.S.   Recently, municipal leaders in Chicago, Boston and other cities threatened to block the licensing of Chick-Fil-A franchises over statements of religious belief made by the corporation’s President.    A proposed mosque in Murfreesboro, Tennessee faced years of delays by county officials, and local threats and vandalism, before finally receiving a court-ordered certificate of occupancy (expected next week).  And the recent attack on a Sikh Temple in Milwaukie shows that even here violence may follow religious practice.

Is it more difficult now to practice religious faith here and abroad?  What do you think?

*The State Dept. report does NOT include the U.S. in this study.
