Money to Burn: A Big Long List of Government Waste

October 16, 2012

Senator Tom Colburn (R, OK) has released his Waste Book 2012, detailing government programs and grants that waste billions of tax dollars on bridges to nowhere, services to no one and contracts to the highest bidder.  Examples include:

  • A Medicaid audit program that costs more than it brings in – (Medicaid) $30 million/year
  • An Electric vehicle tax credit that increases the deficit without decreasing emissions – (Taxes) $74 million/year
  • Phantom, unused grant accounts for closed programs that still draw fees – (Department of Health and Human Services) $2 million/year

My personal favorite is the robot squirrel.  (Yes, I said robot squirrel.)  The full list is here.
