Nonsequitur: We Belong To The Government

November 9, 2012

For Jonah Goldberg, this election clarified a number of things about how the U.S. sees itself.  The terms “progressive,” “government,” “state,” “European,” “American” and even “family” all seem to mean something different than they once did.

In his Gettysburg address 150 years ago, Abraham Lincoln described “this nation, under God” as a “government of the people, by the people, for the people.”  Our democratic government served the people.  And a war was being fought to preserve this mechanism of liberty.  During the election of 2012, the Democratic National Convention proclaimed, “Government is the one thing we all belong to.”  Government is no longer a tool ensuring our liberty; we belong to the government.
