Metaphor of the Moment: “Constitutional Tipping Point”

March 13, 2014

President Obama has unilaterally made changes to the Affordable Care Act more than 20 times. The President has ordered certain parts of immigration law ignored. The President has directed the Justice Department not to enforce certain drugs laws and the Defense of Marriage Act. How do liberals and conservatives both view these “executive actions”?

“Priorities and policies and, yes, even presidents change. Our system is not supposed to change. It’s the guarantee that we all have. It’s an article of faith that we have with one another.”

Jonathan Turley, Professor of Law at George Washington University

“We don’t pass suggestions in this body … we don’t pass ideas. We pass laws. And we expect them to be faithfully executed.”

Representative Trey Gowdy (R, South Carolina)
