Nonsequitur: Obamacare Won’t Let You Buy Insurance Until Next Year
April 9, 2014
If you miss the deadline to purchase health insurance under the ACA (currently delayed until April 15), you will miss the chance to buy mandated health insurance until the next enrollment period begins on January 1. The only exceptions will be for “qualifying life events” (such as marriage, divorce, birth of a child, loss of job or loss of spouse), natural disasters or fraud. Since millions of people have been unable or unwilling to sign up for Obamacare, millions will be uncovered for the next 8 months. Details here and here.
No other insurance risk area restricts your purchase of insurance this way. You can buy auto insurance, life insurance, pet insurance, home insurance, flood insurance, earthquake insurance, insurance for art, insurance for investments, insurance for boats, insurance for body parts (ala J-Lo), all whenever you want, but you can only buy health insurance when the government says so.
