Nonsequitur: Not “One in Five”

December 12, 2014

Rape is violent and criminal.  We must take it seriously.  This means we must use facts to determine how best to combat and punish the crime.

A recent study by the US Bureau of Justice Statistics investigated Rape and Sexual Assault Victimization Among College-Age Females, 1995–2013.  The report uses the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) to compare the rates between student and non-student populations.

The rate of rape and sexual assault for students was 6.1 per 1,000.  The rate for non-students was 7.6 per 1,000.  A large majority of these attacks were unreported to police (67-80%).
