This week’s Suggested Readings are especially difficult, because they deal with conflicting rights and conflicting motivations. In our society, made up of many cultures, religions and political ideals, we inevitably have conflicts. In theory, we should be able to build solutions through our democratic and capitalist mechanisms. But this only works if all sides come together in good faith seeking common solutions. In other words, our society depends on tolerance and fair play to work out mutually beneficial answers to conflict. In The War on the Private Mind (written from the conservative perspective) and Everything Is Problematic (written from the liberal perspective), the authors question whether this “good faith” is being practiced by all sides.
